Mrs. Bottler pressed her plump hand to her bosom. "Such consideration! Such condescension! You are too good, Miss Cummings!"
Chastity dryly agreed to it and moved on gracefully to mingle with her guests. She spent a few moments in light banter with each, pairing couples for dinner and making certain that all had dance partners. Some of the more retiring ladies were more difficult to find partners for, particularly with modest or reluctant gentlemen, but Chastity managed all with aplomb.
At one point, Henry paused beside her. "You have outdone yourself this evening, Chastity."
"Thank you, Henry," said Chastity, smiling up at him. "I was in a quake earlier that it would not turn out half so well. Our temperamental Gaston threatened to mutiny when he discovered that we could not provide him with a white goose for pate. But I assured him that such a delicacy must only be served at Christmas dinner, when there will not be dancing to steal away the admiration of our guests from his masterpieces. I am happy to say that we have survived the latest rumblings from the chef's domains."
"You would make an admirable diplomat's wife. Perhaps I should bestir myself on your behalf and solicit an eligible parti from out of the Home Office," Henry said.
Chastity laughed, shaking her head. "No, pray do not! I have my hands full enough as it is with our domestic crises this year. It has all quite set me against the diplomatic arts. I believe I would prefer a nice snug cottage with a lovely walled garden. It would be too small to allow a great number of guests, so that I would be forced to entertain only those few whom I wished to see on a regular basis, such as you, dear brother."
"I am flattered," Henry said, bowing.
"So you should be!" said Chastity, laughing again. "I do not extend the invitation lightly, I assure you."
"What would you do otherwise?" Henry asked, somewhat amused by his sister's flight of fancy.
